German director Wolfgang Becker, known for the tragicomedy "Good Bye, Lenin!", has passed away at the age of 71. This news was reported by The Hollywood Reporter.
Becker's family announced that the filmmaker died after a prolonged illness.
Born in 1954 in the city of Hemer, he studied in Berlin. His film "Schmetterlinge," an adaptation of a story by Ian McEwan, won a student Oscar.
Becker gained international fame with the film "Good Bye, Lenin!", released in 2003. The movie was sold to 60 countries worldwide and received numerous awards.
