There are many myths surrounding certain foods and drinks regarding their hangover-curing properties. In fact, they not only do not help but can also worsen the situation. This was warned by Vera Serygina, a medical expert from the LabQuest medical company, in a conversation with RIA Novosti.
“Such ‘miraculous’ remedies include fatty foods or a small dose of alcohol. In reality, fatty dishes only increase the burden on the liver and pancreas, while alcohol provides only temporary relief of symptoms due to re-intoxication, which soon exacerbates the condition,” noted Serygina.
Another misconception, according to her, is related to the use of marinades for restoring salt balance. However, in reality, an excess of salt overloads the kidneys, especially when combined with dehydration caused by alcohol. Instead of brines, the specialist recommended drinking unsweetened fruit drinks and water with lemon.
Coffee will not help with a hangover either, as it only causes additional dehydration. As for activated charcoal, it is already ineffective in the morning since toxic substances have already been absorbed into the bloodstream, the doctor added.
The best way to avoid a hangover is to prevent it by controlling the amount consumed, she emphasized.
Cardiologist professor, Doctor of Medical Sciences, and director of the Institute of Personalized Cardiology at Sechenov University, Philipp Kopylov, had previously warned that during the New Year holidays and corporate parties, Russians risk facing the “holiday heart syndrome,” which is characterized by disruptions in the cardiovascular system.
Earlier, doctors explained how to avoid overindulging in alcohol during the New Year.
