The Minister of Sports and President of the Russian Olympic Committee (ROC), Mikhail Degtyarev, spoke about the discrimination faced by domestic athletes. His statements were reported by RIA Novosti.
“Yes, our athletes are discriminated against today, and yes, there are some not very fair decisions and behaviors from certain international federations and organizations, but this should not serve as a reason for self-isolation,” Degtyarev stated. He described those competing under a neutral status as heroes who love Russia and sport, bringing medals back home.
Earlier, the Director of Communications for the International Olympic Committee (IOC), Mark Adams, mentioned that the organization will continue to assist Russian athletes in competing internationally under a neutral status. In particular, World Aquatics has eased entry criteria, allowing domestic athletes to compete at the short course World Championships and secure ten medals.
Since the end of February 2022, most Russian athletes have been suspended from tournaments on the recommendation of the IOC. Some athletes have been granted the opportunity to compete on the world stage under a neutral status.
